Rahu Mahadasha: the 18-year chapter of hunger and change
Updated 31 October 2026
Rahu's period is the one people search about most, and the one most often described in frightening terms. It is neither good nor bad by itself. What it brings depends on where Rahu sits in your chart and which planet it reports to.
What is the Rahu Mahadasha?
In the Vimshottari dasha system, life moves through nine planetary periods in a fixed order. Rahu's period lasts 18 years, the third longest after Venus (20) and Saturn (19). It comes after the Moon's period and before Jupiter's.
Rahu is the Moon's north node: not a physical body but the point where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Classical Jyotish treats it as a shadow planet (chhaya graha) with no sign of its own. That is why its period is so changeable: Rahu takes on the colour of the sign it sits in, the planet that rules that sign, and any planet it travels with.
What it often brings
Rahu is hunger: for more, for the new, for what was out of reach. Its period often coincides with:
- Ambition and sudden rises, especially through unconventional paths, technology, foreign links or large organisations.
- Travel, foreign places and outsiders: moving away, working with people from other cultures.
- Breaking with convention: choices family or society did not expect.
- Restlessness and confusion when the drive has no clear direction: overreach, obsession, or feeling that nothing is ever enough.
Which of these shows up, and how strongly, is a matter of your chart. These are tendencies to watch for, not events that must happen.
Why it differs from chart to chart
Two people in Rahu Mahadasha can have opposite experiences. A reader looks at:
- The house Rahu occupies. That life area is where the hunger concentrates: the 10th points to career, the 7th to partnership, the 4th to home, the 12th to foreign lands or retreat. Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house is traditionally the most productive.
- Rahu's sign and its lord. Rahu gives the results of the planet that rules its sign (its dispositor). A strong, well-placed dispositor steadies the whole period; a weak one makes it erratic.
- Conjunctions. A planet in the same sign as Rahu is amplified and coloured by it, for better or worse.
- Rahu's nakshatra. The lord of the nakshatra Rahu occupies adds its own agenda.
- Ketu, opposite. Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly opposite each other. What Rahu reaches for, Ketu lets go of, in the house across the chart.
The nine antardashas
The 18 years divide into nine sub-periods (antardashas). Each sub-period lord brings its own themes into Rahu's chapter. Lengths below are the standard Vimshottari values.
| Antardasha | Length | Themes it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Rahu–Rahu | 2 y 8 m 12 d | The new chapter at full strength |
| Rahu–Jupiter | 2 y 4 m 24 d | Guidance, learning, wider support |
| Rahu–Saturn | 2 y 10 m 6 d | Work, duty, delays and endurance |
| Rahu–Mercury | 2 y 6 m 18 d | Trade, communication, skills |
| Rahu–Ketu | 1 y 0 m 18 d | Detachment, sudden turns, inner questions |
| Rahu–Venus | 3 y 0 m 0 d | Relationships, comfort, money, the arts |
| Rahu–Sun | 0 y 10 m 24 d | Authority, father, recognition |
| Rahu–Moon | 1 y 6 m 0 d | Mind, mother, home, emotional tides |
| Rahu–Mars | 1 y 0 m 18 d | Energy, courage, property, conflict |
The first sub-period, Rahu–Rahu, is often the most intense, because the new chapter starts with no other planet sharing the stage. Many people feel the Rahu–Jupiter sub-period as a steadier phase, and Rahu–Saturn as a test of patience. Your own chart decides how each one lands.
Entering and leaving Rahu's period
The change from the Moon's period into Rahu's is often felt as a shift from feeling and family toward drive and the outside world. The change at the end, from Rahu into Jupiter's 16-year period, often brings a move toward meaning, teaching, children or faith. The months around each change, the dasha sandhi, tend to feel unsettled.
How to read your own Rahu period
You need your birth date, time and place to know when your Rahu period starts and ends: it depends on the exact position of the Moon at birth. Ask Lumi computes your full dasha sequence for free and, in your Life Story, tells you which chapter you are in now and what it is likely to bring, naming the house, sign and lordship behind it.

How long is the Rahu Mahadasha?
18 years in the Vimshottari dasha system. If you were born during Rahu's period, you live only the part that was left at birth.
Is the Rahu Mahadasha always bad?
No. Rahu in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house, or with a strong sign lord, often gives one of the most ambitious and productive periods of a life. Its reputation comes from the restlessness and confusion it can bring when it is poorly placed.
Which antardasha in Rahu Mahadasha is the best?
It depends on your chart: on how the sub-period lord is placed and how it relates to Rahu. Many people experience Rahu–Jupiter and Rahu–Venus as easier phases, but this is a tendency, not a rule.
Which Mahadasha comes after Rahu?
Jupiter's Mahadasha, which lasts 16 years. The one before Rahu is the Moon's, which lasts 10 years.
How do I know if I am in Rahu Mahadasha?
Your dasha sequence is calculated from the Moon's exact position at birth, so you need your birth date, time and place. Ask Lumi computes it for free.
